What is MasterCard® Automatic Billing Updater?

MasterCard’s Automatic Billing Updater is a service participating merchants can use to help ensure Member account changes—like new credit card numbers—cause as little disruption as possible to card-on-file transactions and automated payments.

What are card-on-file and automated payments?

Card-on-file transactions are payments processed using a card number you’ve stored with a merchant or service provider:

  • Websites with whom you’ve created an account and saved your credit card information:
    – Apparel websites
    – Online retailers (ex., Amazon)
    – Movies/music/eBook download services (ex., Netflix or Pandora)
    – Cashless transportation services (ex., Uber or Lyft)
    – Online payment services (ex., PayPal)
  • Pharmacies

Automated payments are recurring payments you set up with a merchant or service provider:

  • Landline or mobile phone service
  • Cable or satellite television service
  • Utilities
  • Homeowners’ association dues
  • Music subscriptions
  • Magazine subscriptions
  • Satellite radio subscriptions
  • Gym membership dues
  • Anti-virus software subscriptions
  • Motor club/roadside assistance dues
  • Insurance premiums
  • Recurring charitable donations

Will all of my credit card payment information be automatically updated?

No. Automated Billing Updater is only available to participating merchants, and they can choose the frequency at which they check for updated payment information. To avoid late payments and penalties, you must take steps to ensure your credit card information is updated.

What if I don’t update my credit card information?

Automatic payments will fail and merchants may charge you late fees. Most merchants will contact you by phone, email, or text to notify you that you payment did not go through. If they are unable to collect your payment, your services may be canceled and your account may be reported to collections, which could be detrimental to your credit.

For card-on-file transactions, if you try to submit an online order using your old credit card number, once your Visa is deactivated, the transaction will be immediately rejected. You should have the opportunity to update your card information, and re-submit your online order. Physical retailers should only charge any card on file as you’re purchasing goods or services; you must tell them at the time of purchase that your card information has changed.

How do I know what merchants I need to update?

  1. Log in to Online Banking and view or download your credit card transactions.
  2. To capture automated payments for annual subscriptions, be sure to view or download transactions over the past 12 months.
  3. Read through your charges thoroughly and identify which ones are automated payments or card-on-file transactions.
  4. Log in to the merchants’ websites, go to your account information or profile, add your new MasterCard, and delete your Visa.
